Couch to 5K

What I’ve been up to

Posted in iPhone App by Alex on December 29, 2008

I'm kind of embarrassed to say, but I did not keep up with my running past week 1. Holiday traveling got in the way some, but primarily it was the amount of time I spend on the iPhone app. Programming with Apple tools was totally foreign to me, so I had to spend quite a bit of time figuring stuff out. Lots of late night codding going on right now, and when you code late into the night you can't wake up early and run, just can't happen.

The good news is that I'm just about ready to submit the app to the AppStore for approval. I'm just waiting for a graphic from my designer and I'll be submitting it.

So, with the version one out of the door, I'll have more time for the workout and the added bonus is that I can now use my app during work out.

Here's the screenshot of the C25K App's main screen:

It's very simple and clean. As you can see, completed days are market with check mark and the next workout day has an arrow. This makes it really easy to see which workout day is up next. The app doesn't let you skip days, but you can always go back and redo the ones you completed.

Happy running!

So I finally have the icon for my app. I think it’s catchy and conveys the purpose of the app, yet it’s simple and modern. What do you think?

More screenshots to follow.

Progress report

Last Saturday morning I went out for my first c25k run. I chose against the treadmill in the basement and opted for an outdoor run. Well I came to regret that decision five minutes into the workout. I had warm clothes and a hat on, but my hands were freezing. Next time I will wear gloves.

Following the workout's 1 minute running 1.5 minutes walking for the first day turned out to be a chalenge. I kind of expected that, I'm im a terible shape. Couple of repetitions down the road I started having my longest minutes yet. Those 60 seconds seemed never ending and 90 seconds of walking were so short.

The mechanics of switching between running and walking proved difficult as well. I had to constanly look at my watch and keep reseting the stopwatch function. But that was encouranging for my C25K iPhone effort. I can now say they there's definetely a need for an iPhone/iPod Touch application to help with the program.

So how's the app progressing? It's going very well actually. I'll almost done with major development. But more about that next time. I'll even include some screen shots.

Happy running!

I'm been trying to get fit for a few years now. All my previous attempts have failed. I bought a treadmill and brought it in the bedroom, but pretty soon the treadmill found its way to the basement. I joined a fitness club thinking that having somewhere else to go to exercise would make me stick with it, but that lasted only for a couple of months. So, after a few failed attempts, I kind of gave up for awhile. It was always at the back of my mind, I just kept pushing it back and making excuses.

A few months ago, my wife mentioned that one of her friends started following a running program she found online which helped her get active and stick with it. I thought that was great idea, and started Googling around for such a program. The first one to come up was Counch-to-5K by Josh Clark. After reading it and poking around the Internet about it I though it was just what I needed to get me started.

So, here we are, I'm starting exercising again. So, what will be different this time around?

First, I'll be following a program, so having something to stick to should help. Second, I started this blog. It will be yet another commitment to keep me going. I'll be posting after every workout session. Third, I'm working on a iPhone app that will make it easier for aspiring runners to follow the C25K program. I'll be testing that app during my workouts.
